Bowmore and Aston Martin have launched their first collaborative whisky: Black Bowmore DB5 1964. Last year, the Islay Scotch brand and the British luxury automaker announced they were working together to create exclusive bottlings and experience, and this new single malt Scotch Whisky is the first release from the partnership.

The 31-year-old Whisky was aged in a first fill Williams & Humbert walnut brown Oloroso Sherry butt and comes in at 49.6% ABV. Only 27 bottles have been made, making it one of the more exclusive expressions on the planet.

According to the distillery’s tasting notes, the obsidian black Whisky features, “layers of ripe exotic fruits and creme caramel,” on the nose, which blossoms into “soft tobacco smoke, aromatic orange peel and rich black cherry.” On the palate there are “intense flavours of mango, passion fruit and acacia honey interwoven with a powerful combination of coffee and tobacco smoke.” The finish is “wonderfully long and decadent” and filled with “tropical fruits and spice”

The Black Bowmore DB5 1964 bottle was handcrafted by Glasstorm, a contemporary glass studio in Scotland, and is partially made of a genuine Aston Martin DB5 piston.

David Turner, distillery manager at Bowmore, said: “1964 represents a significant date in the modern history of the distillery. Not only a key moment in how we distilled our spirit, but perhaps even more significant as this very spirit went on to create Black Bowmore.

“These defining moments are fundamental to the history of Bowmore. This collaboration with Aston Martin has allowed us to once again showcase this iconic single malt in the most incredible way.”

The year was also an important one for Aston Martin as the DB5 made its on-screen debut as the vehicle of choice for James Bond in Goldfinger.

Marek Reichman, executive vice president and chief creative officer of Aston Martin Lagonda, said: “This exciting new association with Bowmore gives us the perfect opportunity to celebrate a vital part of our star-studded history by combining the unrivalled appeal of the iconic DB5 with the cultured flavours of this world-renowned single malt.”

Black Bowmore DB5 1964 will be available beginning in late autumn 2020 for a price of £50,000 (about $66,000 USD).
