Construction is back underway at the Johnnie Walker Princes Street visitor center in Edinburgh, Scotland. The forthcoming site, located in the Scottish capital’s city center, will become the Whisky brand’s flagship location.

Work halted at the former House of Fraser store on Princes Street back on March 23, but is now underway again thanks to the lifting of certain coronavirus-related restrictions. The company has not announced an official opening date at this time.

The Johnnie Walker Princes Street is supposed to become a ‘world-class’ whisky destination and is the focal point of Diageo’s  £150 million investment in Scotch whisky tourism. Other parts of the plan include transforming Caol Ila, Cardhu, Clynelish, Glenkinchie distilleries as well restoring Islay’s Port Ellen and Brora in the Highlands.

The new site will feature two rooftop bars, a flagship retail store, various interactive tours, exclusive tasting experiences, and a whole lot more. The Princes Street site plans to offer the ultimate Whisky experience for guests from across the globe.

“Our first priority continues to be the health and safety of our people, partners and the local community,” said a Diageo spokesperson.

“We are pleased that our construction partners are now able to restart work on the Johnnie Walker Princes Street development in line with government guidance and we look forward to resuming progress on this flagship tourism investment for Edinburgh and Scotland.”

This year marks Johnnie Walker’s 200th anniversary, and the brand plans to toast its founder John Walker with the creation of the new site. The coming venue has also helped the local community, bringing 160 new jobs to Edinburgh.

“Our new Johnnie Walker brand home is set to be the most exciting visitor experience to hit Edinburgh for some time and will welcome visitors from around the world,” said Barbara Smith, General Manager of Johnnie Walker Princes Street.
