Kraken Rum Is The Official Sponsor Of The Seattle Kraken NHL Franchise

|

On Thursday, Seattle hockey fans found out their new NHL franchise would be named the Seattle Kraken, and none other than Kraken Rum has been announced as their official sponsor.

Geoff Baker of The Seattle Times cracked the news: “The team had to work out trademark agreements on the name with several commercial entities, including Kraken Rum — which has agreed to become the official rum sponsor of the new team.”

Kraken Rum shared the news on their official Twitter later on Thursday, though there is yet to be an official announcement from the company.

Meanwhile, NHL Seattle CEO Tod Leiweke confirmed the Seattle Times‘ report during his noon availability on Thursday. He also gave a ringing endorsement to the brand, saying he can’t wait to pour Kraken into the Stanley Cup.

Kraken Black Spiced Rum was launched in 2010. The base rum is from Trinidad and distilled from sweet molasses made from locally grown sugar cane. The Rum is aged one to two years and then blended with 11 spices, including cinnamon, ginger, and clove among others. Black in colors, there are hints of brown when held up to the light.

The bottle is designed after a Victorian Rum bottle and has two hoop handles based on the tradition of hanging a bottle to prevent breakages. It features a black and white label featuring a drawing of the Kraken sea creature. However, the bottle has a rendering of the actual giant squid with a reference to its scientific name, Architeuthis Dux.

Origins of the Kraken myth date back hundreds of years. “I think the mythology of the Kraken is going to be really interesting,’’ NHL Seattle minority owner Mitch Garber, a member of the team executive committee led by managing partner David Bonderman that selected the name, said in an interview Thursday. “Especially in an arena that’s being dug more than 50 feet below the ground. I think it will be really, really interesting for the fans.’’
