Golfer Wins 204 Bottles of Single Malt Scotch Whisky For Hole-In-One

At the Scottish Open, Aussie golfer Wade Ormsby knocked down a hole-in-one on the 12th and earned himself a staggering 204 bottles of Glengoyne Highland Single Malt Scotch whisky in the process.

The Scottish Open was held at the iconic Renaissance Club in North Berwick, which houses designer Brian Silva’s first-ever 18-hole Signature Course. Famous for its classic design features, straight from golf’s Golden Age of Architecture, The Renaissance Club offers a series of ever-increasingly challenges. The South Australian, however, stepped up to the 12th tee and hit his 5-iron straight onto the green. Three bounces, the ball was at the bottom of hole and Ormsby had a hole-in-one and more whisky than you can shake a stick at.

To be exact, Ormsby won 204 bottles of 10-year-old Glengoyne Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky, which picked up gold medals at the International Spirits Challenge 2020 and The Scotch Whisky Masters 2020.

On the nose, the whisky offers notes of fresh green apple, toffee and a hint of nuttiness. Known for air-drying its barley, never using peat and hand-selected sherry casks crafted from European and American oak, Glengoyne has been continuously in operation since its founding in 1833 at Dumgoyne, north of Glasgow, Scotland.

Australia’s Min Woo Lee, meanwhile, became a two-time European Tour winner after winning a three-way playoff to claim the Scottish Open. In a sudden-death playoff with Matt Fitzpatrick and Thomas Detry, Lee holed in from nine feet for the winning birdie.

In November, Glengoyne unveiled a 50 Year Old Whisky. The single malt is the oldest Scotch to be released by the Highland distillery. Bottled at 45.8% ABV, the Glengoyne 50 Year Old Whisky offers notes of Demerara sugar, walnuts, sweet pipe tobacco, red apples and cloves on the nose. The palate delivers a “rich, spicy oak burst, then molasses, treacle and liquorice take centre stage,” followed by a long finish.
