JAY-Z is as well known for shrewd investments as he is for his musical career. Now the Roc Nation label head has auctioned off an ultra-rare bottle of his D’USSE Cognac at Sotheby’s.

The D’USSE Grande Champagne Anniversaire Limited Edition 1969 found a new home when the buyer shelled out a healthy $52,500 USD.

Speaking of the sale, Sotheby’s revealed that the bottle was expected to fetch between $24,000 to $75,000 USD and was ultimately sold to an unnamed bidder. The Cognac is only one of 285 bottles ever made in celebration of JAY-Z’s 50th birthday in 2019, adding to the exclusive nature of the purchase, this item was named “Bottle No. 1” due to the fact that it is the only bottle with an engraved signature from the rap mogul.

All 285 bottles in the batch are numbered with an inscription on the topper to showcase their place in the batch. Featuring a 12-cut crystal diamond decanter design each bottle is also encased in a luxurious leather box adorned with opulent accents The remaining bottles are expected to have been gifted to JAY’s close family and friends.

The bottle is the first of the Cognac to be on sale publically. Funds from the sale are expected to go to JAY-Z’s Shawn Carter Foundation, which supports professional advancement and entrepreneurship workshops for students.

Speaking about the D’USSE Grande Champagne Anniversaire Limited Edition 1969 JAY-Z said, “When our Cellar Master, Michel Casavecchia, discovered the aged liquid at the Chateau de Cognac and explained how truly one of a kind it is, it was important to me to honor it by doing something that would celebrate its singularity. Once that barrel is emptied, there’s no way the liquid can be recreated. The whole process behind the 1969 Anniversaire collection reminded me why I got involved in the spirits industry in the first place – to create something that will stand the test of time. It means a lot that we’re finally able to share the D’USSE 1969 Anniversaire Limited Edition with the rest of the world, and we’re proud to auction the first bottle in the collection with Sotheby’s to benefit the Shawn Carter Foundation.”
